Frequently Asked Questions
What are Soft Paws®?
An excellent solution to problem dog scratching.
Soft Paws® are vinyl nail caps that glue onto your dog's nails. They look like your dog's nails, only hollow. You fill them with the adhesive provided and glue them on to your dog's nails. The nail covers effectively blunt your dog's nails so no damage occurs when they scratch. They are completely safe and humane and can be used on dogs of all ages. Dogs tolerate the nail caps extremely well. Soft Paws® are easy to apply at home. Dogs and their owners love them. Everything is included in the kit for easy at home application.
Are Soft Paws® safe, and do they hurt the dog?
Soft Paws® are completely safe, painless, and humane. They do not hurt the dog in any way. Soft Paws® are non-toxic. Even if your dog swallows one, the nail cap will just safely pass through the digestive system.
Will Soft Paws® protect my hardwood floors?
Yes! Soft Paws® are great for protecting hardwood floors from scratches incurred by a dog's nails. To protect your wood floors, be sure to apply the nail caps to all four paws. How many nail caps come in the Soft Paws® take home kit?
There are 40 nail caps per package. That is enough for 4 front paw applications or 2 front and 2 rear paw applications.
Once the nail caps are applied, they remain in place for approximately 4-6 weeks. They will fall off with the natural growth of your dog's nails. We recommend that you check your dog's nails periodically because usually just one or two nail caps fall off at a time, and these can be easily reapplied.
Each kit contains 40 nail caps and will last approximately 4-6 months per dog.
While the vast majority of dogs acclimate to wearing the nail caps within minutes, some dogs may require an adjustment period. Dogs sometimes groom the nail caps excessively at first. This may result in one or two falling off. No problem. Just check the nails daily in the beginning, and if one is missing, simply replace it with another from the package. Thus, the first package may not last as long as subsequent packages. Again, most dogs do not even notice they are wearing them after the first 30 minutes.
A good tip is to feed your dog his or her favorite food after applying the Soft Paws®. This serves as a good reward and also diverts the dog's attention away from the new acquisition. Some people find it easier to apply the Soft Paws® when their dogs are sleepy.
How do I apply Soft Paws®? Do I apply them to both the front and back paws?
If you are using Soft Paws® to prevent your dog from scratching the doors, walls, or to protect people from scratches incurred from dogs jumping on them, apply the nail caps to the front paws only. For hardwood floors or leather furniture, you may wish to apply the nail caps to all four paws.
How long does one kit last?
This depends on whether you apply the nail caps to your dog's front nails only or to both the front and rear nails. There are 40 nail caps per package. Each application lasts approximately 4-6 weeks. If you apply Soft Paws® to the front nails only, each kit will last approximately 4-6 months. If you apply Soft Paws® to both the front and rear nails, each kit will last approximately 2-3 months.
How much does the kit cost?
Each Soft Paws® take home kit costs between $19.95 and $23.95 depending on which size you need.

How do I know what size Soft Paws ® my dog needs?
Visit our size chart. You can use this to determine what size your dog will use. Soft Paws® come in the following sizes: X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, XX-Large, and Jumbo.
Note: If your dog is overweight, this does not necessarily mean that he or she is a large dog. To determine nail size, examine your dog's paws.
X-small: Dogs up to about 5 pounds generally fit into the x-small size. To test, try a nail cap on your dog's nail first, without the adhesive. If it looks too big, don't glue it on. The nail cap should fit snugly, like a glove. To accommodate small dogs, you can trim the open base of the Soft Paws® nail cap, making it smaller, so it will fit your dog's nail.
Small: Dogs between 5-10 pounds will usually wear small Soft Paws®.
Medium: Dogs approximately 10-15 pounds usually wear medium Soft Paws®.
Large: Dogs approximately 15-20 pounds usually wear large Soft Paws®.
X-Large: Dogs approximately 20-40 pounds usually wear x-large Soft Paws®.
XX-Large: Dogs approximately 40-70 pounds usually wear xx-large Soft Paws®.
Jumbo: Dogs approximately 70 pounds and up usually wear jumbo Soft Paws®.
What if I select the wrong size?
No problem! When you receive your package, first take one of the nail caps out, and try it on your dog's nails without the glue. It should fit like a glove. If it is the wrong size, you can sometimes trim the open end of the nail cap to adjust it. Or, just send the package back, and we will exchange it for another size. If returning, do not open the glue, and make sure all components are present for return. Be sure to send it in a padded mailer so it remains in new condition.
